The difference is that asylum seekers are not granted refugee status before fleeing an immediate threat, and therefore are assigned a different status upon arrival in the U.S. This also means asylum seekers receive less support and face a different gap in social services than refugees. Those seeking asylum in Texas wait anywhere from 12-36 months to receive a work permit and are ineligible for any government housing or social services.* \nDASH Network program provides housing and other holistic services during the wait for their work permit to assist asylum-seeking families, creating a collaborative community that supports the thriving of a resilient population.\n*WIC is the only exception in which pregnant or breastfeeding mothers and children under 5 years old can receive limited food assistance.\n
